    Mavs are slowly entering panic mode, so coach JK should try something radical from the start. I think puting Doncic on KP (or Al) and one of the Lob Goblins on Jrue, could be a good idea. KP had no success against Luka, except a foul drawn, and also the Mavs' big can rim protect better maybe. The Celtics would try to feed KP as always when he has a missmatch, but this is not much of a missmatch if he is catching it at the elbow. Also the clock will run down easily. Luka can be a good post defender (similar to James Harden). Bonus is that Luka will not be hunted by a quick perimeter player. If they bring up KP for ballscreen, the Mavs should pre-switch. They could try all these out in the first quarter just to disrupt the rhythm of Celtics' offense.

    I take back nothing I said about how bad Joe Mazzula's "offense" was last year however... Now that the players are executing the system _correctly_ and they have the pieces they need, it's actually a brilliant offensive system. Maybe the biggest thing is it creates an environment where JT and JB can complement and play off each other and all the spacing creates easier passing windows and reads for two guys who aren't savant level passers

    My idea was that Luka should absolutely torch the single coverage since the help is basically them stunting at him to force him to pick up the ball. He is a ball dominant player and has been since he was a kid so asking him to do a lot of that off ball stuff like a Curry or Jokic will just take him out of the game mentally since that involves a lot of physicality and he has been whining and complaining about it all postseason. There is also the option of a pass and chase on an empty side DHO, that Luka-Kyrie PnR sound like a good idea, but Joe will just switch that with Holiday and Brown.

    • @michaelahurt
      @michaelahurt 14 дней назад

      But it's real stunts not fake stunts. He was more aggressive in game 2 about testing Boston's commitment but 1) he can't carry the offense alone for 4 quarters so the torching single coverage just isn't tenable; Boston isn't Atlanta and 2) Boston's defenders, especially Jrue, will stay until he picks it up or passes. It's not just a token stunt for show he can just ignore like Minnesota was doing, they are actually in the gap. Moving him off ball is less about running him off screens like Curry but loosening Boston's defense so they can't load up. So instead of Luka bringing the ball and getting his matchup with 10 eyes on him, he starts in the corner or under the basket and comes off screens to flow into his PnR or iso game so that he starts the possession with half a step. Same with Kyrie on the opposite side so the defense is occupied. And it has the added benefit of putting more miles on Brown which puts more of the offensive burden on Tatum

    • @michaelahurt
      @michaelahurt 14 дней назад

      @@sskmanentsa5326 Yeah same thing. You can use off ball movement to get him the ball a little closer. This is where Exum is big as a former PG who can operate the offense and bring the ball up. Luka is still going to get the ball. They aren't good enough to use him as a decoy. You just use off ball movement to get him the ball in more advantageous spots.

      @zsomborszigeti6797 14 дней назад

      Why would you try to make it a full 3-point shootout when you have the worse 3-point shooting team by a wide margin, as well as the worse perimeter defenders by a landslide. Like I think it's just way too drastic of and adjustment. The Celtics only won game 2 by a few points, and 2-0 is not an unrecoverable lead. All you really need is for Kyrie to wake up, that preserves energy for Luka making him a competent defender as well as making him be able to still play well in the fourth quarter and the second half in general and if you pair that with not conceding every single swicth on defense and not hunting non-existent mismatches you can definitely win 1-2 games. To actually win the series you have to do something with the lob brothers as well for sure especially defensively, but you definitely don't need anything as drastic as you are suggesting.

    Mavs should consider conceding 3s to Tatum until he shows them he can make a jumpshot; treat him like C's have treated Jones Jr. Baiting him into shooting 15 3s would both get in his head and could be effective when he goes 3/15. Also, on Tatum, a 92 offensive rating, 35.6% true shooting, on 22 shots (1/4 of the C's attempts) is hardly good, even if his play-making and defense offset some of his terrible shooting. While some drives ended in those assists, several were also him attacking the rim and missing layups (he shot sub 30% at the rim), or passing up wide open 3s for contested drives that ended in nothing. Even with his play-making, his offensive contribution was a net-negative given the high volume inefficiency. He played great defense, but are these really the expectations for a #1 option? C's still won because they're just better, but every game is harder than it needs to be because Tatum possessions are just not that valuable for a superstar

    • @michaelahurt
      @michaelahurt 14 дней назад

      No one is saying he's meeting expectations but the possessions are still relatively valuable. Like Jrue was 11/14 on shots created mostly by Tatum. Tatum serves an interesting function for Boston -- against good defenses -- in that he's kind of a loss leader. He's not good enough to beat star coverage but he's good enough to get it which has a trickle down effect to everyone else. Conceding threes is most likely to result in him getting in rhythm. That's how PJ shot 47% against OKC. He got a couple wide open ones and got a rhythm. To me the worst thing you can do against guy who is struggling is let him get comfortable shots But it's worth playing off a little and trying to bait him (and Brown) into taking pull up threes. It creates an easier driving lane but Luka is getting beat anyway so what's the difference But I _would_ flip the coverage. Load up on Brown and try to take him out of the series and/or test his playmaking and ball handling in traffic. Then play Tatum straight up (like everyone else) until he beats it. At this point bringing an extra guy is helping him because he can just pass.

    • @slightexag
      @slightexag 14 дней назад

      @@michaelahurt I agree that loading up on Brown would be a good strategy here. His scoring really shifts momentum. All Tatum hate aside, and just thinking facts, I think conceding top of the key 3s to Brown and Tatum like C's have been doing to Mav role players would be most effective because drive and kick is the core of what the C's want to do to open up good role player 3s. Letting Brown shoot did not work for I think it was Cleveland and Brown had like 6-7 3s. However, just like how Celtics are okay with Luka and Kyrie iso as long as they aren't play-making, Mavs should let Tatum try to beat them with jump shooting, since he's been inefficient this playoffs. They should give him the wall off the paint Giannis treatment, not for Tatum's scoring but for his play-making. Another option, though I don't think it would work, would be to force White and Holiday to score when driving. White has been weak to length and even moderate shot-blocking in the paint and Holiday has a reputation for missing even somewhat contested layups this year.

    • @michaelahurt
      @michaelahurt 14 дней назад

      @@slightexag Well you can't wall off the paint without leaving shooters open. That's the problem. If you load up too much Tatum is just making the pass to let his teammate shoot/attack With White and Holiday, they are contesting as well as they can at the rim. Jrue in game 2 was driving right at the big and finishing around them. Although you could crash even harder and try to make them playmakers. Maxi not being able to shoot really hurts because what you want is PJ, Maxi, Gafford/Lively so whoever is on the weakside crashes _hard_ to the paint on drives and make Boston's guys make really difficult passes over and over. But Dallas is often operating at a size deficit I also think they could just leave Horford more. Lively/Gafford sink to the rim every play and the team does a full rotation to Horford on the pass rather than them rotating back. Then Al either shoots or they need to reset and burn clock. Although Boston has been pretty good about operating up high or leaving the big as lone guy in the weakside corner or having him as the high guy so you can't play two with one without giving up an open three or drive. But especially with the minutes Al will need to play, you just make him beat you as best you can There are no good options. Boston is just a lot better.

    On the topic of expanding the definition of clutch from high pressure game deciding plays in the final minutes of games to whole game/series performances, i think the two great examples of the extremes of this are Robert Horry and James Worthy. Whereas Big Shot Rob is legendary for his many game clinching shots and single plays, Worthy was a great example of the other archetype, someone who constantly came through in the clutch in terms of ramping up his performance in all four quarters when the games mattered most, not necessarily just in the decisive final moments of games.

    The Celtics takes looks ridiculous and obviously because literally nobody watches Mavs games just highlights that's why everyone is saying how the Mavs gonna stop Boston offense like seriously? The reason why there's people clowning the Celtics run is because they didn't prove anything in their run. Cavs has smaller guards who plays no defense, Indiana is worst with literally kids in the wing. You can put an argument of how good or perfect the Boston offense is but the fact is that they're not tested and proven in their run meanwhile the Mavs on the other hand proved they can do good against their weaknesses in their previous match-ups. Mavs haven't faced like Celtics is a cap they did with OKC it's just the Celtics is better and Mavs proved they can do good at that kind of team. Did the Celtics played a team like the Mavs? Hell fxxxxxg no because all of their opponents were without their best players it's fact. This creates great anxiety in a fan base that is accustomed to winning and has been too close for too long. Then that anxiety gets concentrated on Tatum because he's the best player on the best team and still not a top 5 talent. Then the rest of the league and media see the uncertainty of the city and team and blow it out of proportion. I think Joe's mentality, then, is and has been perfect for this group. We're taking 18.

    Completely glossing over the fact that Luka was clearly hobbled in OKC series, and then when it mattered in Game 5 & 6 he delivered, also in the game 2 win to split away from home.

    Why do you guys use so many regular season stats to make arguments for the playoffs? What does it matter to me if the Celtics are 33-4 at home if they are barely over .500 at home in the playoffs the last couple of years including 2 bad losses this year.

    • @taptiotrevizo9415
      @taptiotrevizo9415 21 день назад

      The 2 bad losses literally had amazing 3 point luck in the other teams camp. They literally said if 3 point luck is that imbalanced you aren't gonna win anyway.

      @@taptiotrevizo9415 yeah good point for Miami but I don’t know, the Cavs win was pretty convincing IMO. It still doesn’t change the fact that they have not been good at home the last couple of years in the playoffs.

    It’s a lopsided finals. Anyone who disagrees is fooling themselves because if they believed it wasn’t they should put a ton of money on the Mavs considering you’d get one of the largest pay days in finals history from a bet.

  • @circaen
    @circaen 21 день назад

    Ben was unsure Mavs would beat Clippers. Yes everyone is saying Dallas is going to win but what they mean is "I want Dallas to win". Dallas has such a low margin of error it's hard to see them pulling this off. People are hype because their playoff run has been so impressive & Celtics has been so blahh. But at the end of the day, Celtics are the most talented team we have seen for a long while.

  • @ChibiMalzahar

    Ideas for naming Lukas strategy: - Jay walking (just in case he does this to dominate the celtics) - Crip walking (Mavs are blue) - Euro Nashing - REC Hour (when prisoners are allowed out of their cells to walk around but theyre still incarcerated) - Slothing - Snailing

    Great content guys, but unfortunately I recently saw a definitely not cherry-picked clip of you not calling Luka the greatest player of all time so I'm going to be toxic to you on social media unfortunately (I consume content through 30 second clips and what other people tell me the content was about).

    • @ctoaun23

      Yeah that's fair. They said Luka had an average performance one time too and that his game isn't completely flawless so these guys are clearly haters and know nothing.

    My silliest question for these Finals is if Luka can get FMVP even when losing, like Jerry West did

    • @ny3793
      @ny3793 21 день назад

      Lmao no. Lebron led the finals in every statistical category while being the best defender and they mistakenly gave it to Iggy. If Lebron didn’t get it then no one will get it moving forward. Luka has never had a playoff series that is close to that finals series by Lebron and Luka doesn’t play defense while Boston has plenty of guys who would be deserving of FMVP

    • @PutXi_Whipped
      @PutXi_Whipped 21 день назад

      No, also Jerry West didn’t deserve it in 1969.
